Video File Formats

AVI - fairly versatile and well supported; many codecs for compression

DVD - MPEG-2 roughly one to two hours on a normal DVD.

MTS (AVCHD) - (Canon HF100 - 1920x1080)

VCD - about 60 minutes per CD; about one half the quality of DVD

SVCD - officially about 20 minutes of MPEG-2 per CD; about 2/3rd the quality of DVD can be made to give about 45 mins of good quality.

VOB - DVD file - damn near impossible to read! Nero's Recode will convert this to an MPEG4 file (which can then be converted to AVI or whatever). VirtualDub (MPEG version) can read and convert these nicely.

WMV - Windows Media Video

Codecs

Common codecs: Indeo, Cinepak, MPEG, DIVX

Nero Burning Software can report the installed codecs on a machine. Video Codecs can be checked via Device Manager; Sound Video and game controllers; Video Codecs; Properties.

Warning: Windows Media Player will automatically attempt to download appropriate codecs!

To do: track down Indeo 5.1 help file 'INDEO5.HLP'

AC3 - 'AC3ACM.zip' contains an AC3 decoder (needed for converting audio from Sony DVD cam files)

Cinepak - good for scenes with a mix of photo realism and brightly saturated objects; weak compression.

DIVX - currently version 5.2.1 (there was an issue with DIVX and WinXP SP2 so be careful to install SP2 first or make sure you get the latest version of DIVX). DIVX Pro claims up to 30% better compression.

Intel Indeo - very good compression, good for photo realistic images, bad at solid unnatural colors (poor for text against a solid color). Info can be found at: http://www.central.dtcc.edu/~nburt/sizzle/video/Indeo5.htm Indeo has powerful features for custom applications (specifically allowing 'blue screening' to project one moving image on top of another image).

MPEG - MPEG-1 older lower res; MPEG-2 is DVD (various different quality settings)

Sorensen - ? (associated with QuickTime?)

XVID - comparable to DIVX but freeware: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ Set target bitrate to 8000kbps (for making an intermediate high res file);

An almost clean Win2000 SP4 PC has: Yum installation steps.

  • iccvid.dll - Cinepak v1.10.0.6 (by Radius circa 1995)
  • Intel Indeo 5.10 (circa 1998)
  • ir32_32.dll - Intel Indeo v3.24.15.03 (circa 1995)
  • msh261.drv - ?
  • msh263.drv - ?
  • msrle32.dll - ?
  • msvidc32.dll - ?
  • msyuv.dll - ?

Hacked and trashed Win2000 SP4 (several video editing softwares installed):

  • DIVX 5.2.1 Pro
  • PICVideo MJPEG Codec v2.10.0.25 (Pegasus Imaging circa 2001) provided by Pinnacle
  • Pinnacle Codec - no further info!
  • Pinnacle PIM1 32-bit AVI Codec

WinXP appears to also have:

  • ir41_32.ax - Intel Indeo 4.4
  • iyuv_32.dll - Intel Indeo Video iYUV v2.00.00.00 (circa 1997)
  • tsbyuv.dll - ?

Video Conversion Tools

DVD Shrink - excellent tool for backing up DVDs

HandBrake - http://handbrake.fr/ - format converter

NeroRecode - can convert VOB to MPEG4

Pinnacle HollywoodFX - not sure what this does. Seems to be an editor to make a video do a special effect (wipes, fades and a zillion others). Imports AVI, MOV, TGA, BMP, PNG.

RAD Video Tools - will convert all kinds of video (and will make Bink & Smacker files)

TmpgEnc - converts AVI to MPEG (works nice!) free version only does MPEG2 for 30 days - http://www.tmpgenc.net - Try using this to 'demultiplex' the VOB files directly off the Sony DVD disks. Now sold by Pegasus Inc http://www.pegasys-inc.com/en/index.html considered to be the best compressor but has obnoxious terrible 'phone home' repeated registration checking.

Virtual Dub - excellent software for converting to AVI. (can append one AVI to another) The MPEG version can read a VOB and convert it. Use the 'smart.vdf' filter to de-interlace source files that are interlaced! Select 'use cubic for interpolation' and 'Motion map denoising'

Video Mixing Software

ArcSoft ShowBiz

Import File Formats: seems to handle most anything (MPG, AVI, DAT, MOV, QT, M1V, M2V, M2P, MPV, MPE, VOB, ASF, WMV,WMA, MPA, ABS, MP2, MP3, WAV, AIF, AIFF, BMP, TIF, PCX, TGA, JPG, FPX

Output File Formats: AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VCD, SVCD, self running EXE, WMV, QuickTime (MOV), DVD

Capture: Can capture from a variety of devices (VFW, WDM, DV, TV Tuner)

Seems to read WMV as audio? (this might have been the PC lacking the correct CODEC)

Claims to be smart about rendering and will not re-render a video clip that is in the same format as the selected output.

Pinnacle Studio 8

Import File Formats: AVI, MPG, MP2

Output File Formats: AVI, MPEG (various options VCD, SVCD, DVD, etc), streaming (Windows Media or RealVideo)

Crashes a lot. Seems to especially struggle or crash with large videos (20 minutes).

NeroVision Express 3

Includes ability to make menus (initial impression is extremely good.. nice and easy!)

Pixela ImageMixer

Import File Formats: unknown

Output File Formats: MPEG-1 (320x240 or 640x480), MPEG-2 (NTSC or PAL), VideoCD (NTSC or PAL)

I find 'ImageMixer' to be confusing to use.

Sonic MyDVD

Import File Formats: AVI, M1V, M2P, M2V, MOV, MP2, MPEG

Output File Formats:

Ulead VideoStudio 7

Import File Formats:AVI, c3d, flc, fli, flx, mpg, rm, uis (Ulead); can not import WMV

Output File Formats: AVI, flc, fli, flx, mpg, rm, uis; MPEG output handles MPEG-1 & MPEG-2 as well as VCD, SVCD & DVD

Seems easier to use than the others. Nice easy to understand output options. Initially confused about creating DVD menus (everything seems to be a single track/clip). Essentially the main program creates a project, aka a video clip, when you do Share and create a disk then you can compile projects together (and/or videos) each of which will be a menu selection for the disk. In other words a 'project' is not a 'disk'. Does not support AC-3 audio tracks (need to be converted first!).

Includes drivers for QuickTime 6.0 and RealPlayer 8.0

Capable of playing and using an MPEG-2 video even without an MPEG-2 codec installed on the PC! (VirtualDub unable to read the same file!)

Conflicts: Adobe Premiere 6.5 and VideoStudio 7 creates an MPEG conflict for VideoStudio 7.

Video Editing Software

Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 - powerful editing software; can't make DVDs with menus; incompatible with DIVX and XVID codecs. 'SteadyMove' plug-in can smooth out shakey video but at serious loss of quality.

DVD-lab Pro2http://www.mediachance.com/ perhaps the best DVD authoring software? $299 for the bundle that includes 'Edit Studio'

Sony Vegas -

Video Players

IrFan (with plug-ins) - very handy, easy to use, supports video slide shows and easily stepping through each file in a directory. Unfortunately the quality of playback of many videos is poor.

Nero ShowTime - high quality playback. Won't display video if the Indeo5 codec is used!

Audio Notes

Do not use 'interleaving' of audio and video for playback from hard drive (it will only increase the size of the file).

It is provided with Server API and SDK for multi-thread dynamic TTS conversions. You can also create TTS applications for your embedded and mobile dvices like iOS, Android and Embedded Linux by using the NeoSPeech SDKs. Neospeech julie voice pack. You can also build IVR, alert, telephony and various other vice solutions by using the versatile text to speech server and SDK.

Adobe Premiere Pro audio compression 'GSM' seems to do the best job.

MP3Tag writing both ID3v1 and ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 seems to work in my 'new' car player.

Frame Sizes

352x240

360x240

352x480 (NTSC)

TV Standards

NTSC (USA & Japan) - 525 scan lines at 29.97 frames per second

PAL (Everyone else) - 625 scan lines at 25 frames per second (SECAM is essentially the same and compatible with PAL)

Video Capturing & Performance Notes

IrFan is a terrible movie player! (the quality of Nero Showtime is substantially better)

With a 700 MHz P3 the recommendation for video capture is 720x480 with a 4000 kbps video data rate in MPEG-2 format. Also suggested as required is a hard drive with a sustained data transfer rate of over 3.6 MB per second.

'FRAPS' can capture video.

DVD Media

Standard (NTSC) DVD format is 720x480.

Note: DVD disks some in two kinds 'General' and 'Authoring'. Do not buy 'authoring' DVDs as they only work in 'professional recorders'.

Apparently both sides of a DVD can be used.

DVD-R: seems to be the most popular; your standard 4.7 GB DVD (actually 4.38 GB usable space in computer terms the video industry uses 1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes vs the computer standard 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes)

DVD+R: newer than DVD-R but seems to have no known difference?

DVD-RAM: 2.6 GB - why would you want it?

Test Files:

  • Hawks_CAP0002.MPG - 38,528 KB; MPEG-2 NTSC DVD Variable Bit Rate Comp Ratio 36%; 1350 frames 704x480 24 bit color 29.97 fps; Audio AC-3 48 khz
  • vm_thunder_VBR10_96kbps.mpg - 932 KB; MPEG-1 Variable Bit Rate Comp Ratio 0%; 459 frames 320x240 24 bit color 30 fps; Audio MPEG 44.1 khz 16 bit Stereo

YouTube

General guidelines for producing a video for YouTube:

  • Image size: 1280 x 720 (30p)
  • Use XVID with a bitrate of about 7000 kbps
  • MP3 Audio
  • Use GOPs of about 300 (large I frame intervals)
  • Consider 'denoising' first (no need for detail in the image that won't survive compression)

For the Canopus converter 'online fine' is virtually the 'best' quality to use. In theory the 'Q' value should be at the smallest and the 'Max size' should be the largest value.

Using Sony Vegas:

  • Set the project properties to 'HDV 720-30p'
  • Render as 'WMV' - select the '6 MB HD 720-30' template and select custom; make sure quality is set to 'best' and increase 'Video Smoothness' to 100.

MTS - Canon HF100

MTS (AVCHD) - (Canon HF100 - 1920x1080) - 'Canon High Definition Camcorders supports the highest HD quality with Full HD with AVCHD format, which uses the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 standard, supporting a variety of standard, high definition, and stereoscopic (3D) video resolutions. For audio compression, it supports bothDolby AC-3 (Dolby Digital) and uncompressed linear PCM audio. Stereo and multichannel surround (5.1) are both supported.'

Corel Video Studio Pro X5 works fine to batch convert MTS. The best converter seems to be MP4 with H.264-High use:

  • 30 fps
  • 720x480 with 16:9 ratio
  • This results in a 1280x720 resolution
  • Compression: H.264-High (this is for HDTV)
  • Video data rate 2000

MTS Converter - Aiseesoft v7.1.70 - (this is not free to convert full files must purchase for $45) (2014)

MTS Converter Free - should work on WinXP
